The Workers’ Party have said that the real reason the government’s water charges commission will not be holding planned public meetings is because the commission’s ruling in favour of charges has already been decided and the commission members “are afraid to look the public in the eye”.

This was the opinion of Workers’ Party spokesman Seamus McDonagh who described the commission as an “expensive whitewash and something for Fianna Fáil and the independent TDs who supporting the government to hide behind” .

Mr. McDonagh said that the temporary suspension of water charges had been nothing more than a charade.  “The government and Irish Water have been hoping that the active community anti-water charge campaigners would tire out and leave their guard down during the suspension. The government will discover to its cost that these hopes have been dashed as the Right2Water campaign takes to the streets of Dublin next Saturday.”
