The Workers’ Party condemns the recent large-scale incursion by NATO-backed terrorist groups into Aleppo as yet another manifestation of escalating imperialist aggression and destabilisation in the Middle East. These events, following the Israeli violations of the ceasefire with Hezbollah in the Lebanon, further expose the complicity of US and British imperialism in fuelling conflict across the region. Such actions serve the interests of capital and monopolies at the expense of the sovereignty and well-being of the peoples of the Middle East.

The United States, Britain, and their NATO allies have consistently supported, armed, and trained reactionary forces and terrorist groups – Islamists under the guise of “rebels” – in their efforts to destabilise independent states, secure control over resources, and assert their imperial dominance. The situation in Aleppo is not an isolated incident; it is a deliberate extension of imperialist strategy, compounded by Turkey’s role as a willing accomplice to US imperialism under the regime of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Erdogan’s government, despite its posturing as an independent actor, functions as a comprador entity within the broader structure of US influence in the region.

We recall the utter hysteria in late 2015 and early 2016 when the Syrian government fought to regain control of Aleppo from the western-backed Jihadis. It constituted a powerful display of the capacity of western propaganda to divert even erstwhile leftists to the service of the western empire. The depths of hysteria at fake stories were matched only by the utter subservience of leftists and liberals towards American framing of the conflict.

Many leftists, even revolutionary socialists – in particular those who trace their lineage to Trotskyism – treat every uprising against a government as an instance of incipient revolution, neglecting the specific context that by far the most significant force in the Syrian “revolution” have been fanatical Islamist soldiers funded by Saudi Arabia and the West and with the active support of Israel.

This latest assault on Aleppo takes place against the backdrop of NATO’s proxy war against Russia in the Ukraine, a conflict that has already pushed Europe closer to militarisation and heightened global instability.

The incursion into Aleppo is not merely a tactical operation; it reflects the long-term imperialist aim to undermine Syria’s sovereignty and reverse the victories achieved by the Syrian state and its ally Russia against foreign-backed terrorism. The strategy of supporting mercenary armies, arming reactionary regimes, and imposing economic blockades is designed to perpetuate chaos, ensuring the region remains fragmented and subservient to imperialist interests.

The Workers’ Party expresses its unwavering solidarity with the people of Syria, who continue to resist imperialist aggression, and with the working classes across the region striving for peace and sovereignty.

The path to peace lies in the global struggle against imperialism and capitalism, which fuel war, poverty, and exploitation.

We wish for defeat upon the proxies of US imperialism and victory to the Syrian government.
