The Workers’ Party condemns the United States’ bombing of Iran, as well as Israeli attacks on Iran that began earlier this month.

This latest development is yet another dangerous escalation by the United States and NATO in their ongoing campaign of expansion against those who resist their influence, from Russia to Palestine and now further east into Iran. There is a serious threat posed by the United States, Israel and NATO to not only those living in the states that they seek to overthrow, but to all of humankind with the wars that they wage. As new fronts open up, it is never certain where the conflict might spill over to next, or to what extent it might further drive us towards a Third World War.

It should be obvious by now that those who argue for United States-led regime change are in practice arguing for American domination of the world and against the sovereignty of nations. Some of these people may be simply misinformed liberals, while others know fully well that this is an ideologically partisan ploy, but either way they place themselves on the side of imperialism. One does not even have to go back to the Cold War, during which the United States attempted regime change around the world, but can look back to as recently as the 1990s and 2000s to see the impact of American-led regime change: the people of the nations in question lost out while American companies made a killing.

Ireland, for its part, must ensure that it ends its complicity in the imperialist wars being led by the United States. This means an end to the US Army using Shannon Airport as a stop-off, an end to Israel-bound weapons flights using Irish airspace, and the passing of the Occupied Territories Bill. Additionally, Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil ought to cease their drive towards NATO membership and protect Irish neutrality.

The Workers’ Party, like all right-minded, anti-imperialist and genuinely progressive-thinking organisations, calls for an end to this latest phase in the aggressive expansion of Western imperialism, as well as to this US/NATO-led campaign as a whole. Only this can ensure an era of peace, sovereignty and democracy.
