Dublin’s Merrion Hotel this morning cancelled the press launch of the “National Party,” an initiative of former Youth Defence leader Justin Barrett. The launch was due to take place in the hotel tomorrow (Thursday), but was cancelled following significant public opposition directed towards the hotel.  The Workers’ Party has welcomed the Merrion Hotel’s decision, saying it shows the total lack of support in Dublin for the anti-immigration platform of Barrett and his new venture.

Workers’ Party councillor Éilis Ryan this evening said: “The National Party wish to promote a hateful politics which is racist, anti-immigrant and anti-woman. Clearly from the immediate opposition mobilised around the launch, that platform, and Mr. Barrett’s own history, are unacceptable to Dublin’s citizens.”

Justin Barrett, not the first venture into far right politics

The Councillor said that at a time when far right politics is gaining a foothold in many European countries, it is essential that such initiatives are immediately halted in Ireland, saying: “We see in France, in the United States, in Germany, that the far right is claiming to represent working class communities who are struggling under austerity. They have no place in those communities, and we in Ireland have a proud history of ensuring this remains the case here.

“The National Party is far from the first attempt to establish a racist party in Ireland – but today’s action gives us confidence that it is unlikely to last much longer than its failed predecessors. We are certain any attempt to relocate the event will be met with equal resistance.”, said Cllr. Ryan
