The Workers’ Party of Ireland condemns the ongoing and systemic attacks on European democracy by the EU.
We condemn attempts by Georgia’s outgoing ceremonial President, Salome Zourabichvili, to undermine the country’s democratically elected government. The French-born agitator has repeatedly backed violent demonstrators and has threatened to not stand down from her post. On Saturday, 53-year-old former English Premier League player Mikheil Kavelashivili was chosen as the new president of Georgia by a 300-seat electoral college. Kavelashivili has promised to “restore the presidency to its constitutional framework.”
Recent protests on the streets of Tbilisi, although highly redolent of the widely-condemned January 6, pro-Trump United States Capitol attacks, have been encouraged by the pro-Western and EU lobby within Georgia and beyond.
The Workers’ Party of Ireland condemns the delegation of six MEPs who recently visited the country and marched with the insurgents. In October, a general election — viewed by many as a de-facto referendum on joining the EU or moving closer to its regional neighbour, Russia — returned the ruling, pro-Russian Dream to power with 54 per cent of the vote. Displeased by the result, the European Parliament has questioned the result and requested a re-run. This is part of a sinister emerging pattern of European and US interference. It represents the hijacking of democracy by self-styled champions of democracy.
We condemn the questionable results of November’s Moldovan elections. Despite assurances that the diaspora would be allowed to vote in the recent Moldovan general election, only 10,000 ballot papers were allocated for Moldovans living in Russia; at least 500,000 Moldovans currently reside in Russia.
Furthermore, we condemn the outrageous overturning of the election of Călin Georgescu in Romania. In November, the NATO critic and independent won the first round of the Romanian election with 22.9 per cent of the vote. A Romanian court subsequently annulled the election, citing the multi-purpose Cold War bugbear: “Russian interference”.
Recent months have brought many examples of outside interference, but not from Russia.
