The Workers’ Party has appealed for calm following the fatal shooting of a man carrying a knife by Gardaí in Clonee.

A spokesperson said: “The Workers’ Party finds it regrettable that an incident has taken place involving an attack on a shop worker and the tragic fatal shooting of a man in connection.”

“We appeal for calm at this time and are calling for a full independent investigation to find out what happened. Until such an investigation has been completed, nobody can be sure of the full details.”

“The anti-social behaviour that we’ve seen following the incident acts only to terrorise an innocent working class community. One video circulating on social media shows workers and customers allegedly trapped in a shop by those involved in the anti-social behaviour. This sort of behaviour serves no purpose.”

“Those who are inciting this behaviour are simply exploiting a volatile emotive situation for their own opportunistic gain.”
